Winona Laura Horowitz, professionally known as Winona Ryder, is an American actress. She originally played quirky roles but gained prominence for her more diverse performances in various genres in the 1990s.

Born in Olmsted County, Minnesota to Cynthia (Istas) and Michael Horowitz, she spent her early years on a ranch commune in Northern California. Her parents were friends of Beat poet Allen Ginsberg.
